How Does Small Group Training Work? A Guide to Small Group Classes at Evolve

‍Small group training at Evolve is an individualised program delivered inside a group setting. Classes run in Caringbah in 60 minute blocks with a maximum of ten athletes, each working from a program built around their own experience, history, goals and any injuries, with the coaching, morale and community of training alongside other people.

If you have looked into training options in the Sutherland Shire, you have probably come across small group classes and wondered how they actually differ from a big gym class or a one on one session. At Evolve Human Performance in Caringbah, small group training gives you both. You get a genuinely individualised program written around you, delivered inside a class with other people around you for the energy, accountability and community that training alone does not give you.

This guide walks through what small group training looks like from start to finish, who it suits, and how our coaching team runs it so you know exactly what to expect before you book your first session.

What Is Small Group Training at Evolve?

Small group training is an individualised strength and conditioning program delivered in a class of up to ten people. There is a main workout that gives the session its structure and theme for the day, but almost everyone in the room is working a version of that program adjusted for their experience, training history, goals, current injuries and any events they are building toward.

It is genuinely the best of both. You get the depth of programming and attention you would expect from individual coaching, inside a class environment that brings the morale, community and accountability of training with other people.

Who Is Small Group Training Suited To?

This is the part people get wrong most often. Small group training is not built for one type of athlete. It works for people who are new to structured training and want proper coaching in a supported environment. It works just as well for people who have trained for years and want programming that actually accounts for their history rather than a generic template. And it works for endurance athletes, including the runners and triathletes we coach through our online programs, who need strength work that supports the sport without adding unnecessary fatigue.

The common thread is not fitness level. It is wanting a program built around you, delivered with real coaching, alongside other people rather than training alone.

How Is This Different from a Big Group Fitness Class?

The biggest difference is that the program is built around you, not the room. Large group fitness classes are usually the same session for everyone regardless of experience or history, with a coach managing the whole class rather than individual programming. At Evolve, class numbers are capped at ten so your coach can keep the individualisation running properly across the session, and the coaching stays hands on rather than general.

The programming philosophy is also the same one we apply across our S&C and run coaching work: building strength and durability in a way that carries over into how you move and perform outside the gym, not just how much you can lift inside it.

What Does a Typical Small Group Session Look Like?

Before a session starts, athletes fill out a short readiness survey, and it is common for a coach to check in directly on how someone is pulling up. That feedback shapes whether the plan for the day needs to shift for that person before the session even begins.

Classes run in 60 minute blocks, which gives enough time to complete the session properly. You are not rushed through the work or racing a clock the way you can be in a large group class. A typical session moves through a general and then more specific warm up, jumps, plyometrics or power work where appropriate for the individual, the main lifts for the day, then accessory work and resilience and robustness work to finish. There is usually a main theme running through the session, with most of the individualisation happening in the accessory and resilience work at the back end.

You will see the same faces most weeks, which is part of what makes small group training work. There is accountability built in without it feeling like a bootcamp, and enough consistency in the group that coaches Riley and Mat get to know each person's training history and where their program needs to flex week to week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is small group training?

Small group training is an individualised strength and conditioning program delivered inside a class of up to ten people. There is a shared main workout that gives the session its structure, with the program adjusted for each person's experience, history, goals and injuries, mainly through the accessory and resilience work.

How is small group training different to personal training?

One on one personal training is fully individual from session to session with no one else in the room. Small group training gives you an individualised program too, delivered inside a class environment, which adds the community and accountability of training with other people and is generally more affordable than one on one work.

Do I need to be fit to start small group training?

No. Because your program is built around your own experience and history, small group training works for people at any starting point. New athletes are coached through proper technique from the first session rather than being left to keep up with the group.

Where can I do small group training in Caringbah?

Evolve Human Performance runs small group classes from our facility at Unit 3, 55 Willarong Road, Caringbah, servicing the wider Sutherland Shire. You can see current session times and get started on our semi private training page.

Can runners and triathletes do small group training too?

Yes. A number of our small group athletes are runners and triathletes using the sessions to build strength that supports their sport. Programs are adjusted so strength work complements rather than interferes with your training on the road or in the pool.
