Running Technique Assessments in the Sutherland Shire: What the Evidence Actually Says
Running technique assessments look at how you move so a coach can identify inefficiencies, compensations, and how load is distributed across your body. They do not diagnose or treat injuries. At Evolve in Caringbah, we use them to understand how you generate speed, where your effort is going, and how to spread training load across tissue that can handle it.
Most runners who ask about a running technique assessment want one of two things. They either want to run faster for the same effort, or they want to stop getting hurt. At Evolve, based in Caringbah in the Sutherland Shire, we run technique assessments for both reasons, but the honest answer is that technique work does not deliver on either promise the way most runners expect.
The research on running technique is a lot messier than the confident claims you will find on Instagram or in a running store. Some of what gets taught as gospel, like a universal ideal cadence or a single correct foot strike, does not hold up well against what actually predicts injury or performance. This post goes through what the evidence does and does not support, and where technique work genuinely earns its place in a training program.
Is There One “Correct” Way to Run?
Watch any elite marathon field and you will see enormous variation in how the athletes move. Some run with a pronounced forward lean, others almost upright. Foot strike, arm carriage, cadence and stride length all differ from runner to runner, and yet they are all running at speeds most of us will never get close to. This is not talent covering up bad mechanics. Research comparing running technique across large groups of runners has consistently found no single pattern that separates the efficient from the inefficient. One study clustered runners by movement pattern across a range of speeds and found two genuinely distinct running styles with no meaningful difference in running economy between them.
That does not mean technique is irrelevant, it means there is no universal blueprint. Each runner tends to settle into what researchers call a preferred movement path, shaped by their anatomy, training history, strength and old injuries. Some of what looks like a technique flaw is actually a sensible solution for that particular body.
Does Poor Running Technique Actually Cause Injuries?
This is the part that surprises most runners. The assumption that bad form causes injury is baked into a lot of coaching and physio advice, but the research linking specific biomechanics to injury risk is weaker and less consistent than that assumption suggests. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling more than 3,400 runners across 25 separate analyses found that the large majority of biomechanical and musculoskeletal measures tested showed no meaningful relationship with injury risk. A separate review looking at over 1,000 biomechanical variables across 82 studies reached a similar conclusion, reporting that minimal evidence supports a connection between altered running biomechanics and running related injuries.
This is not saying technique never matters for a given injury. It is saying the relationship is not linear or universal the way it often gets presented. A knee that caves in slightly on landing is not a guaranteed injury waiting to happen, and a textbook stride is not a guarantee of staying healthy. Training load, tissue capacity and history explain far more of who gets injured than the shape of someone's stride, which is the whole idea behind building the engine and the chassis together.
Then Why Do We Coach a Similar Technique to Most Runners?
If technique is not the main driver of injury and there is no single correct form, it is a fair question why we coach technique at all. The answer is that most runners, when you look at the patterns associated with better running economy, do converge on a broadly similar set of features even though the details differ. A 2024 systematic review of 51 studies found that shorter ground contact time, smaller vertical oscillation and higher leg stiffness were moderately associated with better running economy, while cadence on its own showed only a weak relationship. That cluster of traits is generally what we coach toward, not because it is the only way to run, but because it tends to be a reasonably efficient way to run for most people.
The exceptions matter just as much as the rule. If someone has been running well and staying healthy with a pattern that sits outside what we would typically coach, that is not automatically something to fix. We are working with the runner in front of us, not retrofitting them to a textbook.
Can Running Technique Make You Faster?
Technique can influence speed, but the effect is smaller than most runners expect and it rarely works in isolation from fitness and strength. Running economy, how much oxygen you burn to hold a given pace, is affected by biomechanics, but biomechanics only explains a modest slice of the difference between runners. The bigger levers are aerobic fitness, muscular power and consistency of training. Where technique work earns its place is cleaning up the small inefficiencies sitting on top of your existing fitness, things like excessive vertical bounce or a stride pattern that is bleeding energy sideways instead of forward.
This is also where strength training crosses over with technique. The ankle and calf complex stores and returns a large amount of elastic energy with every stride, and runners with a higher capacity to store and release that energy through the Achilles and calf tend to have better running economy. Improving what that tissue can produce and tolerate, through work like our strength exercises for runners, often does more for speed than any amount of cueing a runner to change their stride shape.
Can Technique Help You Run the Same Pace for Less Effort?
Speed and efficiency are related but they are not the same question. A runner can hold the exact same race pace while using noticeably less energy to do it, and that is often the more realistic goal of technique work, especially for runners who are not chasing a personal best so much as trying to make their current pace feel sustainable for longer. Reducing wasted vertical movement, tightening up arm carriage, or improving how efficiently the ankle stores and releases energy through a stride can lower the metabolic cost of running at a pace you already run, even if it does not immediately show up as a faster time.
Over a marathon or a long training block, that difference compounds. A pace that used to feel like a genuine effort starts to feel more like cruising, which is the kind of change runners actually notice day to day in training even when a stopwatch does not tell the full story.
What Can Watching Someone Run Reveal Beyond Speed?
This is the part of a technique assessment that has the most practical value, and it has nothing to do with judging whether someone's form looks correct. Watching how someone runs, particularly as fatigue sets in, can reveal where their body is compensating for a weakness somewhere else. Research on fatigue and running mechanics has repeatedly shown a pattern where reduced power and stiffness at the ankle gets compensated for by increased work at the knee and hip, a redistribution of effort up through the leg as the calf and Achilles complex loses its ability to store and release energy efficiently.
In practice, that might show up as a runner who starts driving harder from the hip in the second half of a long run, or someone whose stride shortens and cadence climbs as their calves fatigue. Neither of those is a flaw to correct on the spot. It is information about what that runner's tissue can currently produce, and it points directly at what needs to get stronger, whether that is calf raises, plyometric work, or general lower body strength through our strength and conditioning program.
Can Changing Your Technique Help an Existing Injury?
Even though technique does not reliably cause injury, deliberately changing how you run can be a genuinely useful tool once you already have one. This is not about correcting a flaw, it is about temporarily shifting load away from a tissue that is irritated and onto tissue that can tolerate it while things settle. A small increase in cadence, generally in the order of 5 to 10 percent, has been shown in controlled studies to reduce loading at the knee and tibia without a meaningful metabolic cost, and one two-week gait retraining program using real-time feedback on landing forces reduced injury occurrence by 62 percent in novice runners over the following year.
The important distinction is that this does not fix the underlying issue causing a tissue to be sensitive in the first place. It buys that tissue a break by redistributing where the work happens, which is often exactly what is needed alongside the rest of a runner's rehab and strength work, but it is a tool for managing load, not a cure. We use it that way, as one part of getting a runner back running and staying there, not as a stand-alone treatment.
